As I was searching the internet to find out who came up with this amazing campaign idea, I worked out it all began down under, in Australia!
Particularly by a company called Ogilvy Australia (Click here to see their work). After doing some research Ogilvy found out that 50% of young people in Australia hadn't even tried a Coke and some of them admitted they hadn't gone out and bought one for themselves in months. Ogilvy realised they needed to reach out to the young people of Australia.
They added 150 popular Australian names to coke bottles and cans all over the country. The original idea took the country by storm and eventually everyone was looking for theirs or a friends name so they could 'share a coke'. Today, both Ireland and The UK have hopped on the 'share a coke' bandwagon and both countries have over 150 of their most popular names each to offer.
All the results (sales increases etc) of Australia's version of the campaign can be found in this YouTube clip.
Today I also found mine and a friends name on a coke bottle in our local Tesco Extra store, and with our excitement it is very clear why this campaign has been such a huge success around these all countries!
